Great Firehouse Cooks of Texas

Jammin' Jambalaya
I actually got this book because of the jambalaya recipe that I tasted at a party. As it was cooking, I read the accompanying writeup on the fireman who gave the recipe and ended up reading the entire book. I thought the stories of the fireman added a nice touch. Recently I gave a copy to a firefighter friend of mine and he was delighted (which was definitely a first). There needs to be a "More Firehouse Cooks", so I'll have a Christmas present for him next year.

Hot Stuff, too!
I stole the above title because it's perfect. I've only had time to try a few recipes, but so far, so good (agree with the above recommendation for the Jambalaya on page 150). It's the stories of the firemen that make this book so special-like the stories about the chefs in Top Texas Chefs: Favorite Recipes. Great gift idea!

Hot stuff!
This is a great cookbook but a lot more. The stories of the firefighters, their families, how they feel about their jobs, were funny, moving, inspirational, and more. Get this one even if you never intend to enter another kitchen. (The receipes are great, too. Check out page 150, for sure.

Hall & Ball: Kiwi Mountaineers from Mount Cook to Everest
Published in Hardcover by Mountaineers Books (December, 1997)
Author: Colin Monteath
Average review score:

Extreme sports attitude in historical detail
Both the pictures and text of this book are authentic and tell the story of typical New Zealand adventurers that became famous and died in the mountains. The pictures are by Hall, Ball, and friends. You see what you have only read about in books on Everest climbs, from the dawns to the garbage. The text puts the Himalayan climbing tragedies in context of the lives of the heros and their friends. Details come from journals, letters, interviews, and memories. The author knew Hall & Ball well. This is a great tribute, compelling read, and looks good on a coffee table too (big book).

Hall and Ball, an adventure that many dream about
Rob Hall and Gary Ball, two New Zealanders who lived the dream of conquering 7 of the world's highest summits in 7 months. This book is full of breathtaking photography, a touch of humour, the heartaches and joys of conquering the summits and the tragedies which cut their lives short. This book is a must for those who have similar aspirations and dreams.

The Great Adventure
As a fan of mountaineering writings and photography I was pleased to 'discover' this fine new book. Most people will know of Rob Hall in light of the tragic storm that took his life and several others in May of 1994. But as you will find there is very much more to the Hall story and his amiably unorthodox business partner and friend Gary Ball. This book is very well-written and lavishly adorned with inspiring climbing photography. It tracks the early days of Hall and Ball on their home peaks on the South Island of New Zealand to the world's Greater Ranges. Although, there is plenty of lively dialogue concerning Everest and the issues of commercial expeditions between the covers, this book as a whole is a pleasant santctuary from the "controversies" of the Everest disaster. It serves to joyfully remind its audience of the enduring appeal of high mountains and the vibrant life that can be found there. I highly recommend this book. It is a thoughtful illumination of two legendary mountaineers and the great adventure that was their lives.

Holy Habits: A Womans Guide to Intentional Living
Published in Paperback by Navpress (December, 1999)
Authors: Mimi Wilson, Shelly Cook Volkhardt, and Marilyn S. Wilson
Average review score:

A second bible for women!
As a woman and mother, this is the most inspirational and uplifting book I have ever encountered! I bought one for every woman in my family!

"Teach us to number our days aright"
This book is an outstanding book for Christian women wanting to live intentionally. This 12-chapter book is not difficult reading, but has many valuable insights which bear reflecting on.

There are questions at the end of each chapter and I feel that taking the time to write out the answers and look up the pertinent verses is a valuable learning tool. It does, however, take much longer to get through the book that way!

In the first part of the book, Mimi Wilson dealt with the different names of God and what those names mean to us in our practical day-to-day lives as Christians. She lists "Holy Habits" for us to follow. For example, God Is Elohim can be expressed by hooking yourself into his transcendance and looking for His fingerprints in the world and telling others about what you see. For God is Yahweh, the author recommended looking at every day as a gift from God. In the chapter on God as Yahweh-Shammah, the "holy habit" was to silence one's heart daily so we can be sensitive to God's presence.

The last two chapters are entitled "Daily Contentment" and "Walking with the Eternal One" and I feel that they do the best job of summing up the main points of the book.

The bibliography section is excellent as well (I often get ideas for other books to read from the list of recommended books!)

This book would be ideal for a women's Bible Study group, or for individual study. If you're interested in books of this type, you might try Elizabeth George's books as well.

May God bless you richly as you study His Word!

This book will change your life!
I love this book. I have grown so much, learned so much. The holy habits that you learn will make you a new person more open to God and more holy. I thought I needed to develop holiness myself but I have learned that God will do it but I need to open myself. The authors are so devout and they share their lives in such a open helpful way. This book is full of examples that will help you grow in the Lord. It is a 12 part bible study but I read it over and over. I love the parts about not complaining about ANYTHING not even the weather and the part about having a present next to your bed so its the first thing you see in the morning to remind you of Gods presents to you. It makes you thankful first thing in the morning. YOU will love this book.

How to Board Up Your Kitchen and Cook from a Hammock

Authors: Virginia B. Elliott, Pamela Englund, and Judith L. Powell

Board up your kitchen is a great idea, a great cookbook
I am not Suzy Homemaker, but I like to eat well -- as long as the food preparation doesn't take too much time or effort. The recipes Elliott includes are tasty and just as easy to fix as the title indicates. This lady knows what she's talking about and she makes it easy for domestic duds to eat well yet live a life outside the kitchen. Hooray for Virginia B. Elliott!

Kitchen time and money saving with humor.
Chatty, easy to read. This warm writer/cook talks about her family with love and includes easy receipes that save money and time in the kitchen. Browsing through this book is like having dinner with a woderfully wild family. The author lives in Naples, Florida. The chapter on "Four Legged Chickens and Rabbits With Wings" is a must! After my mom's visit on the 4th of July, I felt compeled to update my review.

At Home with Moms cooking.
Very chatty and easy to read. She is a warm writer/cook. Talks about her family with love and includes easy receipes that do not cost an arm and a leg. It is like having dinner with her and her family and..."here is how to prepare this meal". I ought to know, I am her son, and her meal suggestions when I was in college in Califorina kept me fat and sassy.

How To Do Everything with Office XP
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (24 July, 2001)
Authors: Laurie Ann Ulrich, Robert Fuller, and Ken Cook
Average review score:

This book is GREAT!!
So far, everything I need is in this book. I wrote to the author with a question on a printing problem I was having, and she answered really quickly, and helped me out. Even though my problem really didn't have anything to do with Office! This book is easy to read, but doesn't baby you too much. There is a ton of information in this book and its really organzied and explained well. I recommend this book to any new or intermediate user of Office, even if you alreayd think you know it.

Makes Office seem easy and powerful.
I bought this book because I really liked the Excel Troubleshooting book by the same author. I figured if she could write about Excel and explain both simple and complex concepts with equal effectiveness, she'd probably do a good job with the rest of Office. I was right, and I encourage you to buy this book. The examples are practical and realistic, and the coverage is thorough without being dull, and the author's being a teacher really shows because she really can explain things clearly and seems to have a lot of experience with people using and learning Office. I recommend this book without any reservation.

Great reference for Office XP
I've been using Office for a while now, and they upgraded me to XP at work, even though I was happy with 97 (they skipped the 2000 upgrade). There were enough new features in XP and there are a zillion things that even an experienced user can miss about Office, so I decided to get a book. This book really makes it easy to learn them. I found quicker ways to do stuff that I'd been doing the way I taught myself to do them, and found a bunch of new features I didn't even know existed. This isn't one of those NYC phone book-thick books, but it does cover all the parts of the Office suite. The writer is easy to read, gives really clear examples and practical suggestions, and obviously really knows the software and how to explain it all to people. I really recommend this book!!!

I Hate to Cook Book
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Fawcett Books (December, 1976)
Author: Bracken
Average review score:

You can't afford pizza and there's some cans in the cupboard
My first (and favorite) mother-in-law gave this to me as a wedding present, twenty years ago. At the time I fancied myself quite the gourmet cook, and was mildly insulted. Finally, out of boredom one day, I read it cover to cover. I fell in love with it. There are several laugh-out-loud phrases in it, and Hilary Knight's illustrations are gems. Then, as I started working longer hours and no longer wanted to do something en croute for my husband for dinner, I turned to the recipes. They are simple, good and fast, and most of them can be crammed down a child's throat without too much fuss. They were written in the days before we knew about cholesterol, but hey, not everything's perfect. Are you tired of presenting Tuna Helper to your family? This will give the effect of a much more home-cooked meal. Good everyday family meals, relatively nutritious.

You should also read Peg Bracken's other books. They're terrific, too.

Great fun to read AND good recipes to boot!
Peg Bracken's "I Hate to Cook Book" sure has an awful lot of good, simple recipes for a book that purports not to be about cooking. It's fun, fun, fun to read and the recipes truly are simple and good.

The best thing about the book is Bracken's inimitably breezy voice. When she tells you to stir "Company Carrots" until they're well-coated, she writes, " . . . stirring so that all the strips get well acquainted with the sauce." When introducing a recipe for "Rosy Radish Salad," she prefaces the instructions with, "This next one uses up radishes and some of your canned beans." No doubt she's always eager to get beyond dinner because she wants to get out of the kitchen and be seated with her guests, enjoying the conversation! She's a hoot to read, and the recipes work. I love the recipe names: Lamb Shanks Tra-La, Elevator Lady Spice Cookies, Sour Cream Cinch No. 1 and No. 2, Philosopher's Chowder, Breakthrough Salad, Immediate Fudge Cake, Dazzleberry Tart (which begins, "If the dazzleberries aren't ripe yet, use canned cherry pie filling"), and more. Even the chapter names are funny (No. 22 is entitled "Stealing from Knowledgeable People"). Get this book if you enjoy cooking or hate cooking--it doesn't matter--but definitely get it if you like a good laugh and good, plain, simple recipes.

Need to see table of contents
I used this cookbook as a newlywed. It saved many a dinner party. I thought the author was Erma Bombeck.(obviouslt I was wrong) Before I order this book I would like to know if there are afew recipes which I remember. That way I can be sure this is indeed the book I want.

Is there a chicken recipe called Chicken George?
Also is there one called Hamburger Stroganoff?

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Pat Rahimi

i'll cook when pigs fly...
this cookbook has a wonderful variety of great, elegant, and easy recipes for casual entertaining with friends and families. i happen to love cookbooks, and this is a wonderful addition to my collection.

One of the Best
As a collector of cookbooks (more than 600 titles) with an emphasis on the "Junior League" books, this is one of my all-time favorites. I have tried many, many recipes and they are all great. I found lots of "different" recipes that were simple to make and tasted great. Definitely add this one to your collection.

The BEST cookbook ever.
The cookbook has never failed me. I have given it to several people as a gift and they also raved about it. Has both simple and complex recipes. Also need tidbits about Cincinnati in the margins.

The Journals of Captain Cook (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (03 April, 2000)
Authors: J. C. Beaglehole, Philip Edwards, James Journals of Captain James Cook on His Voyages of Discover Cook, and Hakluyt Society
Average review score:

READ THIS ALONGSIDE RICHARD HOUGH'S BIOGRAPHY
This is a spectacularly interesting journal. Cook was an odd sort, that's for sure. But a genius? I'd certainly say so after reading his often-daily account of his activities. Really neat book.

A detailed account of Cook's voyages
This well prepared abridged edition of Captain James Cook's journals is a specialized book of interest to people studying the exploration of the Pacific and/or the British Navy of that time period. Other people might find sections of it dry reading. The book is recommended for oceanography students as the 17th century voyages of exploration formed the basis for later oceanographic cruises.

Cook's voyages carried scientific personnel of that time period, many of whom died from the harsh conditions along with members of the crews. In addition to bad weather, there were diseases and hostile natives (including cannibals). Extensive charting was carried out and, on the second voyage, the Board of Longitude supplied Cook with Larcum Kendall's copy of John Harrison's H4 watch for determining longitude. Observations were made of prevailing winds, currents, temperature, and other things of scientific interest.

Natives throughout the Pacific would go to great lengths to obtain iron, expecially axes, even prostituting their wives and daughters (willing or not). Natives would attempt to steal items, if they could, leading to numerous confrontations including one in which a boat crew of the Adventure (the consort ship of the second voyage) were killed and eaten by the Maori natives of New Zealand.

Cook's journal ended several weeks before his death. The editor fills in details from journals of other people who were on the voyage, and speculates on the reason he was killed by the natives in Hawaii.

The book includes maps of Cook's routes on his voyages. It also has an index listing the names of the various individuals mentioned, with an indication of their positions on the voyages or their other positions if they were not active participants.

A classic re-launched
This re-issue of the Beaglehole edition of the Cook journals attests to the enduring importance of Cook as the exemplar navigator and Beaglehole as his nautical Boswell.

The writing is elegant and subtle and the fascination of the recital enduring.

Best there is no other!
